Immigration and Refugee
Protection Act

The new Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) has become a law since June 28, 2002. This modern and balanced legislation replaced the 25-year-old Immigration Act. It recognizes the many contributions that immigrants and refugees make to Canada; encourages workers with flexible skills to choose Canada; and helps families reunite more quickly. IRPA is also tough on those who pose a threat to Canadian security while continuing Canada's tradition of providing a safe haven to people who need protection.
